New Year News - January 2008

Welcome to 2008!

Happy New Year!

Michael Bowers & I wanted to be among the first to wish you the best of New Years in 2008. 2007 was great for us, and we hope as you reflect back it was a good year for you. Now, we move into resolutions and planning, and looking forward to the seasons ahead.

We ran across a quote that struck us as very relevant for this time of year. It was attributed to Edmund Burke, and read, "The greatest mistake is made by the one who does nothing, because he could only do a little." In 2008, we want to take that idea to heart. Our resolution is to do what we can, even if it is a little, because if everyone did that--well, it's better than compounding interest in savings. The planet wouldn't be the same.

1. WAMMIE NOMINATIONS

2. BIRCHMERE DATE

3. 333 PHOTOS

4. BACA SHOWCASE

5. UPCOMING SHOWS

1. WASHINGTON AREA MUSIC ASSOCIATION The Washington Area Music Association (WAMA) recently announced the nominations for 2007. We are honored to have been nominated for both Best Contemporary Folk Duo/Group, and Best Contemporary Folk CD for Dreamers, Lovers, and Outlaws. Siobhan was also nominated for Best Contemporary Folk Vocalist. The WAMMIES, as they are called, are the Washington DC area equivalent to the Grammy Awards. The awards show, where the winners will be announced, will be on February 17th. Keep your fingers crossed for us.

2. BIRCHMERE DATE We are very excited to announce that we have been booked to open for Hal Ketchum at the Birchmere Music Hall--one of the premier music clubs in the US. It is an honor to be able to play that stage, and to open for Hal. That's not happening until May, so you'll hear more about it before the date, but we wanted you to know about it now.

3. 333 PHOTOS We put up a few photos up on www.dreamersloversandoutlaws.com of our performance at the 333 Coffeehouse in Annapolis, Maryland, that we played on December 21st. It was a very nice evening, and we appreciate, Jane Meneely for inviting us. The venue and folks there are wonderful, and if you are in the Annapolis area and haven't been there to hear the music--by all means, go! You'll love it.

We know we have a lot of photos up overall, by the way, but you'll look at what interests you, and skip the rest. We like to remember and recognize the places we've played, and hope you enjoy them.

Check them out at www.dreamersloversandoutlaws.com, and click on photos.

4. BACHA SHOWCASE We'll be headed to Massachusetts in a couple of weeks (January 13) to play a brief set at a showcase for the Boston Area Coffeehouse Association. This showcase is important for us, because the venues--the Boston area coffeehouse coffeehouse coordinators, committees, etc., will be there to listen and deciding if they might like to have us come play at their venues. It's not a public show--open to members of BACHA only, but if you happen to be a member, we'd love to see you there...and, this is another time when we'd ask you to keep your fingers crossed for us.

5. UPCOMING SHOWS Aside from the BACHA showcase, we'll be doing several important shows in the coming couple of months. Here's a short list:

February 9 -- Acoustic Brew, State College, PA

February 14 -- The Athenaeum, Alexandria, VA

February 17 -- Strathmore Music Hall, Rockville, MD

February 22 -- Minstrel Coffeehouse, NJ

February 23-- Good Folk Coffeehouse, Rowayton, CT

You can check out our schedule at www.dreamersloversandoutlaws and click on "calendar/schedule" for more details on each of these, and other shows that are upcoming.

We're also pleased to announce that later in the spring we'll be opening for Colin Hay (from the band, Men at Work) at Sanctuary Concerts. We'll give you more about that--and more--later.

Finally, a reminder for all our friends from Song School in Lyons, Colorado: remember, Song School sells out, so make your reservations now. We want to see all of you in August, and since we've just passed the season of "no room at the inn" we don't want an encore of that scenario in August, in Colorado.

Ditto, by the way, for the Swannanoa crowd. Contemporary Folk week classes do fill up, so as soon as you can, reserve your place there as well.

We'll see you all down the road--and remember, do what you can. If we all do a little, the world can change.

As always, check out www.dreamersloversandoutlaws.com for the latest information.

Older News

While waiting for "Our Lady of Perpetual Hold" to get me through to a particular business... I thought I'd enlighten you with a few bits of important news that some have missed for one reason or another. So much has happened over the last while that I'd like to point you in the direction of the new Roundhouse Music Agency website.

Please go to www.dreamersloversandoutlaws.com after you read this note.

Meanwhile, a few facts...just in case you're from upstate NY and wondering where I went.

1. I married Michael Bowers (an excellent singer-songwriter) on June 19, 2004.

2. I moved to Alexandria, Virginia (that goes along with the Michael news).

3. Michael and I are working together a great deal--writing, recording, performing.

4. I'm the new Director of the Mid Atlantic Song Contest, presented by the Songwriters' Association of Washington (www.saw.org). Assistant Director is the talented and beautiful Ginger Starling. She is currently in the process of saving me from insanity....bless her. We make a great team and work closely with SAW President Jean Bayou. We've made a few critical changes to the contest and I think you'll like it a great deal.

EVENTS COMING UP: All dates performed with Michael Bowers

March 25, House Concert in Sterling Virginia

April 1, Vocal Workshop, New York City (private-ish)

APRIL/ MAY

House Concert, Tucson, AZ

House Concert, Salt Lake City, UT

May 12, Carriage Barn at Waveny Park (Evening)

May 13, PRESENTING WORKSHOP:"BEING CREATIVE WHILE MAKING A LIFE: 30 minutes or 8 hours a day" We're all incredibly busy with our lives, jobs, family and everything else that creeps in around the edges. So when do we have time for nurturing our artistic selves? Artists Siobhan Quinn & Michael Bowers present this innovative hands-on workshop which includes, among other things: their "Five Pages" artistic, creative and business self-assessment leading to the development of artistic/creative goals, creation of a brief business plan statement, financial strategizing, program plan (for presenting artists), marketing & publicity statements. Will include examples of creative "sparking" exercises, community building, and an example of an excellent 10 minute vocal warm-up for musicians. While these artists are musicians, this workshop translates to ALL mediums and genres.

AND LATER THAT NIGHT! May 13, Living Room Series, Hyde Park Library (Evening)

Memorial Day, Visiting Kerrville Folk Festival for Tom & Cary's Wedding!

This summer I'll be teaching my Master Voice Class at the Swannanoa Gathering Contemporary Folk Week again, my third year there--this is quite unusual, so I feel quite honored. I'm actually teaching voice quite a bit these days (individuals mostly, but also workshops). I've tried to limit it to three days a week but it keeps creeping up in the schedule. I'd limited it to fifteen students but somehow it has become 18. Ahh well. But I enjoy the students a great deal, and they enjoy my teaching, so that's very important. Keep your eyes open for a vocal book/cd coming down the pike.

Michael was a songwriting finalist at Kerrville NewFolk in 2005, and South Florida Folk in January 2006...unfortunately the hurricane knocked out the South Florida location so they postponed the festival until next year--we were looking forward to seeing Aidan and Christine (the duo Friction Farm, and Aidan is Siobhan's brother) in their stomping ground of Florida.

Michael and I will be writing quite a bit over the next two months and recording on retreat. We started by default at Foxrun house concerts in MA. Five excellent live tracks later we've had a demand from fans for an album together. When fans ask, you must answer, so we expect to deliver by early 2007.

Great to have you visit the site, thanks.

Welcome to the UK Christmas tour of Boneshaker!

We -Boneshaker- were at the Kiveton Folk Club this evening, lots of really good local a capella singers in the pre-set. Kiveton is located outside and on the other side of the city of Sheffield from Hillsborough where I'm located at the present time. I think I've finally got a hold on the layout of this area, although I've been told that by saying that I leave myself open to being deserted on the Moors outside of the city with just a compass, a piece of flint and a grubby bit of cotton wool. So I'll just zip up and act lost. I do wonder what the grubby bit of cotton wool is for though, anyone know?

Actually the city IS difficult to read. It's made up of seven former villages connected by the population growth during the industrial revolution.Like my current home city of Troy, NY, it's fame is built on the steel and iron mills located next to swift running streams and rivers. The Boneshaker Bicycle was made right at Kelham Island at the center of the industrial quarter- there are now quite fancy co-op apartments in the old mills, with little roadsters parked outside. The city of Sheffield sits below the moors, and my favorite drive: the snake pass leading to Glossop. The views are outrageous.

The nights are wonderfully dark here, for a city of much more than half a million I'm surprised at how many stars one can see. This morning I watched the sun rise with brilliant vermillion and gold streaks across the sky early over the Rivelin Valley leading into the Don River.

As far as Boneshaker is concerned, we all seem to have got past our various illnesses and injuries of the week and are doing just fine. Tomorrow we're at Fagan's from 9pm until midnight. We'll raise a pint to the missing.

December 15

Hello there! Boneshaker and I have been having a great time performing here in the UK. The Grapes gig was great and proves we're a determined bunch. Martin (fiddle) had the flu from hell and was flat on his back unable to make the gig, and Trev (slide, mandolin, harmonica) is the one armed bandit. He went down "with grace" on his motorcycle two weeks back on a slick road and has a (very, very) busted collarbone. NONETHELESS...he was there, arm in sling, and played some hot slide work on Dustbowl Children. AND he did a thumbs-up sign for the x-ray. bless 'im

Tonight, Pete Rophone, Chris Coates, Will and I just finished rehearsing one of my favorite songs "Rosie," by Jonathan Byrd. Please check him out if you can, you will not be disappointed. Pete Rophone-- a Boneshaker lead singer-- has a heck of a voice. Much to his chagrin I've likened it to Bono, only Pete's is better, really... think Jeff Buckley.... Chris Coates stepped into the 'brother' role on that song as well

We'll be at the Kiveton Folk Club on Tuesday night and hope to have some video shot at the gig streamed to through this site early January. I'll also be getting some of the images from last Thursday's The Grapes and last Saturday's Edale Village Hall gigs loaded up (soon? we hope). Thanks to Tegi for that one!

U.K.

Great news! Siobhan will be gigging with the band Boneshaker in the UK during the Christmas holidays. This is also an opportunity for a special songwriting retreat and an opportunity to stop over to France to see family.  So look for some brand spankin' new songs in the new year. Bits and pieces will be posted about the gigs and we're hoping to have some video streamed onto the site.
